"Johnny B Good" is a 1974 18'
3" Sanger Circle Boat 5/8" Runner.
This boat was originally purchased new, in late 1974 by
Drew Backlund (owner of
Drew Marine, LLC in
Spokane, Washington) for the 1975 season. Drew
personally rigged the boat and built the engine to SK
(ski racing runabout) specs. A genuine Holman and
Moody Boss 429 engine was used, but was de-stroked to
3.33 for 398 c.i. This engine developed 650-675 HP at
7500 RPM. The de-stroking was done to fit within the
SK spec of a maximum allowable engine displacement of
405 c.i.
Drew's team, based out of Spokane, Washington, competed
in Region 10. This Sanger was registered (at that time)
as SK-49 under the name "Stone Gon" and Drew was his own
driver, pit-crew, and mechanic.
Season Results
1975 - 5 first place finishes
1976 - 8 first place finishes
1977 - not raced
1978 - final run in SK and KRR, 1st on 2 days
After the boat's racing days were over, Drew sold the
boat. It was purchased some years later by John Reid, who
lives in the Seattle area, Washington state. John had the
engine rebuilt, adding the current 6-71 supercharger, and
replacing the crankshaft with one that is not de-stroked.
The current configuration develops in the area of 1100
HP. Drew did this engine rebuild.
